DESD Time Line

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) commissioned the �gsustainable development�h concept.

The importance of education was included in the �gAgenda 21�h sustainable development action plan at The Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

In August, Japan�fs proposal to establish DESD was recommended during the Johannesburg Summit. UN-DESD was adopted at the United Nations Fifty-seventh Session of General Assembly.

UNESCO announces the DESD Framework for a Draft International Implementation Scheme.

Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) appointed Expo 2005 in Aichi, Japan as the kick-off event for DESD.

The International Implementation Scheme for DESD was approved at United Nations Headquarters in NYC. Expo 2005 was held in Aichi, Japan.

UNESCO World Conference on DESD (mid-decade report) was held in Bonn, Germany in March 2009. It was decided to hold DESD (final evaluation) in Japan in 2014.

We will propose �gDESD World Festival Forum (tentative title)�h at the UNESCO General Conference in 2014.

"DESD World Festival Forum (tentative title)" will be held in Japan based on DESD (final evaluation).
